ADHD Medication Shortages

For several months, there has been a nationwide shortage of Adderall XR (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine ER) and now Concerta (methylphenidate ER 18 mg, 27 mg, 36 mg and 54 mg).

Unfortunately, other than short-acting amphetamine-dextroamphetamine, there are no substitutes for Adderall XR. Vyvanse is a possible alternative, but since it is a brand name, the cost could substantial. For Concerta etc, we can try to find another form of methylphenidate ER as a replacement.

Writing and rewriting prescriptions to different pharmacies in an attempt to refill these prescriptions has become a very time-consuming task for our office staff.  If your child needs a refill of one of these prescriptions, we ask that you make calls to find a pharmacy that has the medication in stock. If none is available we will need to discuss the use of short acting Adderall (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine) or switching to Vyvanse, if possible. For methylphenidate, we will try to order a comparable dose.

Please do not wait until you are almost out of the medication to start this process.

Thank you for your understanding.
